A Wind Mitigation Inspection evaluates a home's capacity to withstand any type of wind damage that the weather may cause.
A Wind Mitigation Inspection is highly recommended for homeowners with older properties or those who have recently made improvements to wind-resistant features of their home. Additionally, if you’re purchasing a new home, a Wind Mitigation Inspection can provide valuable information about the home’s resilience to wind damage.
A Wind Mitigation Inspection can directly impact your home insurance premiums by potentially lowering them. Insurance companies assess risk when determining your premium, and a home with proven wind-resistant features presents a lower risk. By providing your insurer with the results of a Wind Mitigation Inspection, you may qualify for discounts that could significantly reduce your annual insurance costs. The savings from these discounts often outweigh the cost of the inspection, making it a smart investment for homeowners in high-wind areas.
Roof coverings: The time and date of installation and if it meets local building codes.
Roof-deck attachment: The quality and type of roof decking used in the structure and how well it is attached to the structure. If nails are used, what is the length of the nail and the amount of space between each nail.
Roof to wall attachment feature: This is the most significant factor, and the location of the attachments is important. Are roof trusses attached with either nails or hurricane clips? Are the wraps only single, or are they double?
Roof Geometry: Is the roof hip, gable, or another type? How does the roof's shape affect the way the wind flows over the roof that may cause damage? This is a significant point for qualifying for an insurance discount.
Gable end bracing: If the roof is a gable roof structure, the ends must be thoroughly inspected to ensure they are braced according to building standards. If the ends are more than 48 inches tall, they must be braced and reinforced according to local building standards.
Type of wall construction: What type of materials were used in the home's construction. Greater insurance discounts can be obtained when steel-reinforced concrete is used for the walls as opposed to plywood only.
Presence of a secondary water barrier: This is installed as a part of the roof, directing safe water flow and providing added protection from leaks.
Opening protection: This includes shutters and any sort of pre-installed protection devices that are designed to protect the structure from wind-born debris in the windows and doors. These devices are checked to determine their protection ratings. To qualify for an insurance discount, the home must have 100% of all openings covered and all devices must have valid protection ratings.
